Salut! Hello!

bah oui, ça faisait un sacré bout de temps que j'avais pas posté de photos. Il faut avouer que je n'en ai pas pris beaucoup non plus.
Pour cette série, je change un peu de registre. Les photos n'ont peut-être l'air de rien, mais il m'a quand même fallu 3 séances et environ 130 photos! Tout ça pour déterminer ce que je voulais faire et ce que je pouvais faire.

It's been quite a long time since I posted some pictures. I must say that I haven't been shooting much lately.
For this set, pictures are different from my usuals. Pictures may not be impressive, but it took me 3 sessions and around 130 shots! That was needed to determine what I wanted to do and what I could do.

j'ai profité du beau temps temps de samedi pour aller faire un peu de rando dans la vallée de Chevreuse. La rando s'est révélée être plutôt un échec, les indications que j'avais ne correspondaient pas au terrain. Du coup, j'ai assez peu marché mais pris beaucoup beaucoup de photos, c'était l'occasion de tester mon nouvel objectif. Après un sérieux tri, il y plusieurs photos dont je suis plutôt assez fier.
Il y a trois thèmes: Chevreuse et son château, les bébêtes et les plantes. Je pense que la partie sur les plantes est la plus réussie.
Allez faire un tour, et n'hésitez pas à critiquer. Signalez moi en particulier les photos que vous n'appréciez pas, ça m'aidera à comprendre ce qui marche et ce qui ne marche pas. (je parle de vous au pluriel, mais je ne suis même pas sûr qu'il y ait une personne qui lise ce post).

As the weather was not too bas last Saturday, I took the occasion to go hiking in vallée de Chevreuse, a few tens of miles south-west of Paris. The hike proved a failure (I had wrong indications), therefore I spent a lot of time taking pictures, to test my new lens. I trashed a lot of pictures but I am quite proud of most of the remaining ones.
Have a look, and don't hesitate to criticize. Especially, tell me which pictures you don't like. (I hope there are still a few non-french speaking readers of this blog...)

Hi again, Salut!

voilà maintenant quelques photos que j'ai prises au musée national du moyen-âge, à Paris. C'est surprenant de découvrir que dans le coeur de la ville, il subsiste encore quelques bâtiments médiévaux, malgré les guerres et tout. Le musée est situé juste en dessous de la Sorbonne, c'est pour dire.
J'y ai pris quelques photos d'objets dans le musée (statues, etc) mais le plus intéressant (à mon avis) reste le bâtiment qui abrite le musée, l'hôtel de Cluny.

I now present some pictures which I took at the Middle-age national museeum, in the heart of Paris. It's interesting to notice that there are still few buildings in the city remaining from medieval times, given the number of wars and everything.
I took some pictures of the objects presented in the museeum, but, IMHO, the most interesting part is the building hosting the museum itself.

Château de Versailles

Salut, Hi all,

voilà quelques photos prises lors d'une visite au château de Versailles. Bon, j'ai pas trop assuré, ma batterie s'est retrouvée complètement vide avant que les fontaines ne se mettent en route. Il y en a quand même quelques unes qui sont pas mal.

Here are a few pictures taken in the gardens of château de Versailles. Unfortunately, my camera battery was no charged enough, so I couldn't take all the picture I'd have liked to (moron? yes). Well, you can still check those which I could take, they ain't that bad.

I just wanted to share with you some pictures I took about a month ago, around 5:45am. Dunno why I woke up, but the sun was rising and there were lots of small clouds in the sky. It was pretty magical.
I took some pictures and went back to sleep...

Feux d'artifice - Fireworks

salut à tous, Hi all,

j'ai profité du week-end du 14 Juillet pour prendre des photos de feux d'artifice, c'était la première fois que j'essayais ce genre d'exercice.
Je me suis donc installé avec mon trépied sur une plage d'une petite ville du sud-ouest. J'ai varié la durée d'exposition de 2.5 à 30 secondes, ne sachant pas trop ce que ça rendrait. Je pense maintenant qu'il est préférable de rester en dessous de 5 secondes, sinon, les photos deviennent moins lisibles et les traînées de lumière sont trop présentes. L'autre difficulté, c'est de ne pas avoir trop de feux d'artifices superposés ou bien d'arriver à les capturer en entier, et pas seulement le début ou la fin.

July 14th is the French National Holiday (Bastille day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastille_Day)
It is customary to shoot fireworks in every city (well, nothing like the mess it used to be in Bridgeport in Chicago for July 4th). I was in a small city on the west coast (not in California, in France!) where the fireworks were taken in a bay.
So, I settled on the beach with my tripod and took shots during the whole cession. I tried various exposure times (from 2.5 to 15 seconds). As it was the first time I was trying to do this, I wasn't quite sure what would be the appropriate settings. I now think it is best to remain under 5 seconds, otherwise, pictures get too messy.
Well, here they are.

Hi all, Salut tout le monde!

vous en avez peut-être entendu parlé, peut-être pas, mais en ce moment, la tour Eiffel est illuminée en bleu cet été pour célébrer la présidence française de l'union européenne.
Donc je suis allé voir ce que ça donnait et j'ai pris quelques photos.

For the upcoming six months, the French president (Nicolas Sarkozy) will also be presiding the European Union (Every country in the EU presides the EU in a round-robin fashion). To celebrate the event, the Eiffel tower is illuminated in blue for the summer, which is quite different from the usual golden color. You'll also notice twelve yellow stars in a circle, they represent the european flag.
As I was curious to see the result, I went there and took some pictures.

T-Storm over Paris

Salut, Hi!

vers la fin du mois de Mai, il y a eu un super orage sur Paris, j'en ai donc profité pour prendre des photos d'éclairs avec mon nouvel appareil.
La recette est simple: pose longue (30s), un trépied, iso à 100, petite ouverture ou sous exposition. Et un orage, de nuit. Il faut juste croiser les doigts pour qu'il y ait des éclairs pendant le temps de pose, et surtout, qu'ils soient dans le champs.
Le résultat est pas mal, hormis la barre au milieu des photos. C'est parce que je suis arrivé chez moi alors que l'orage était bien commencé, donc je n'ai pas trop eu le temps de bien tout préparer.

Around the end of May, there was a big Tstorm over Paris, so this was a good opportunity for me to try my new camera. Although spectacular, it is not so difficult to take this kind of pictures, a tripod and a long exposition (30 secs). I didn't have much time to do the setup, so that's why there is this thing in the middle of the pictures, but I am quite plesed with the results anyway.

il y a 15 jours (déjà!), je suis parti en vacances faire de l'escalade dans les calanques de Marseille. Super temps (pas comme à Paris!), plein de falaises à escalader, et des paysages superbes.
Cet album présente les photos prises dans la calanque de Morgiou.

Two weeks ago, I went on vacation to the South of France (Marseille) to go climbing on real cliffs, not indoor, for the first time. The weather's been great, the cliffs too, and the landscapes were awesome.
This album shows the pictures taken in one of the two areas where we've been climbing.

Salon du modélisme, Paris miniatures show

Salut à tous, Hi all,

J'ai profité du lundi de Pâques pour aller faire un tour au salon du modélisme, au Bourget. C'était assez sympa, et j'ai découvert qu'on faisait vraiment des maquettes pour tout: avion, bateau, voitures, trains, c'est assez classique, mais également des scènes de bataille, des reproductions de photos (qqun prend une photo et réalise une maquette avec la même scène que sur la photo.
Bon, moi, ce que j'aime le plus, ce sont les trains, et il y avait vraiment de chouettes circuits. Sur une des photos, c'est assez marrant, on dirait que c'est un vrai paysage, si ce n'est qu'on voit la tête de qqun dépasser.
D'un point de vue photographique, pas grand chose à dire, ça manque de lumière donc il faut mettre le flash, mais comme le flash ne porte pas assez loin, l'arrière plan n'est pas éclairé. C'est assez net sur certaines photos.

The pictures I am showing you here are those which I took at one at Paris miniatures show. I am not sure I've translated it correctly, but this is a show where you see reproductions of trains, cars, bots, almost anything, but at a smaller scale.
It was quite nice.

Disneyland Paris

Hello folks,

sorry, it's been quite a while I haven't been posting anything here. So, today, I decided to make two posts in a row (buy one, get one free).

This set of pictures was taken at Disneyland Paris, where my company decided to have a team building day. It was quite a load of fun.
The pictures by themselves are not so great, especially the colors, mostly due to bad lighting conditions (understand mixed weather).

For some of you who might come one day to Paris for vacation, this is one place you may be tempted to go, but remember that this is probably the most americanized place in France. Everything is labeled in English.
Oh, and if you ever eat a burger there, they only provide the meat, you need to add the onions and stuff by yourself. For twice the price of a MacDonald's menu, it is a bit of a shame.
Anyways, everyobdy has fun there. That's the Disney magic.

Gare du Nord

Hi everyone,

in this post, I will show pictures of a completely non-touristic place in Paris: Gare du Nord (North Station). There are several train stations in Paris, but gare du Nord is the one with most passengers per day: 0.5 million, which makes it third in the world.
There are two metro (subway) lines, 3 RER (local train going thru Paris) lines, multiple trains to the northern suburbs of Paris, long distance trains to small cities in the North of France, TGV (high speed train) to larger cities in the North of France (mainly Lille), Eurostar, which goes to London, and Thalys, which goes to Bruxelles (Belgium) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).
There are all kinds of people, from businessmen going to London or Amsterda for business to poor immigrants living in the poor cities in the north of Paris going to work and every class in between.
The train station itself is an assembly of different locations: old building for long distance trains, TGVs, modern building as the entrance for local trains and darker corridors for the underground RER and métro lines.
I took the pictures this week-end on a saturday afternoon, when the station is very quite, you'll still see many people. On rush hours, I would not have been able to take any picture, everybody is walking from train to métro or RER, corridors are way too crowded.

Promenade à Paris

je souhaite une bonne année à tout le monde, pleine de joie, de réussite, de santé et de ce que vous souhaitez.
Les photos ont été prises ce week-end, les premières ont été prises place Cambronne (15è), il n'y a rien de particulier là bas, sauf que j'ai remarqué le blason et la devise de Paris sur un pont où passe le métro. Dans le fond, on voyait les Invalides.
Après, je suis allé place de la Concorde, puis j'ai traversé la Seine pour aller à l'Assemblée nationale. En fait, je cherchais les colonnes de Buren, mais en vérifiant ensuite, j'ai appris qu'elles étaient au Palais Royal. Donc je vous ramènerai des photos des colonnes une autre fois.

As this is my first post of the year 2008, I wish you all a happy new year, full of success, happiness, health and everything else you're hoping for.
As the weather was not too bas, I had a short walk in Paris this week-end, and I took a few pictures.
The first pictures where taken at Place Cambronne, which has nothing special. It was the first time I noticed the coat of arms and motto of the city of Paris! It was simply put on a bridge for the subway. The motto is a latin locution: Fluctuat nec mergitur, which means: She is tossed by the waves, but is not sunk (Il vogue sans jamais être submergé) and the coat of arms represents a boat.
Then, I also went to place de la Concorde, with its famous Oblélisque, brought back from Egyptia by Napoléon (I believe it was offered to him). Then I walked across the Seine river to l'assemblée nationale (National assembly, or first chamber). I walked all around the block and saw the different entrances. I was actually looking for a modern sculpture, les colonnes de Buren, but after checking, they are in a different area. So hopefully, you'll see them in another post.
